The Story

Light Defines Images

You can have the best camera, the most striking subject, and the most precise composition but if your light is wrong, the image falls flat. Editorial lighting isn't simply about illuminating a subject. It's about sculpting space, directing emotion, and stamping a visual identity onto every frame.

“We built this workshop because we kept seeing the same gap: talented photographers with strong aesthetics who hadn't yet unlocked their relationship with light. They were guessing rather than deciding. Reacting rather than directing. This workshop closes that gap.

We want you to walk out of this room and never look at a softbox the same way again."

Who This Workshop Is For

The Working Photographer

You're shooting professionally in portraits, commercial work, or lifestyle, but want to expand into editorial and magazine-level imagery. You know gear. Now you need vision.

The Emerging Creative

You've built a strong aesthetic on natural light but know you need to master artificial lighting to compete for the bigger briefs and bolder editorial commissions.

The Genre Shifter

You’ve established yourself in wedding, documentary, sports, or commercial photography and now want to explore editorial—fashion and magazine work—learning its visual language, lighting, and how to transition confidently.

The Ambitious Enthusiast

Photography is your passion and you're ready to level up seriously. You want to understand lighting from the inside out, taught by a duo who does this at the highest level every day.

Learning Modules

Light as Language: The Editorial Mindset

1

35 min

Before we touch a single strobe, we establish a shared framework for how editorial photographers think about light. This module reframes lighting as a storytelling tool rather than a technical necessity, and introduces the visual vocabulary that separates editorial imagery from everything else.

The Full Picture: Directing & Collaborating with Your Creative Team

2

40 min

A great photograph is rarely a solo act. Behind every editorial image is a team of highly skilled collaborators, and knowing how to lead, communicate with, and get the best out of each of them is what separates photographers who shoot great single frames from photographers who run great sets. This module covers the human side of editorial production: who does what, how the roles intersect, and how to build a creative environment where everyone does their best work.

Building the Set: Multi-Source Lighting & Atmosphere

3

Open Q&A — Ask Us Anything

Single-source lighting is the foundation. Multi-source lighting is where editorial photographs become worlds. This module teaches you how to layer light intentionally, combining key lights, fill, kickers, background lighting, and practical sources to build images with real atmosphere, depth, and edge.

On Set with AB+DM: How We Actually Work

4

80 min

35 min

This is where everything comes together. Rather than simply talking about how a professional editorial shoot runs, we show you. In real time, in front of the full group, we execute a live editorial shoot from first light to final frame. You'll watch how we communicate, make decisions, direct talent, adjust lighting on the fly, and move through a set the way we do on any given shoot day for a magazine or advertising client.

The day closes with a full, open Q&A. Nothing is off limits. This is your chance to ask the questions you've never had the right room to ask — about lighting, about the industry, about building a career at the editorial level.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • You should be comfortable with manual exposure and have some experience working with off-camera flash or studio strobes, even just entry-level. You don't need advanced lighting experience. You do need a genuine drive to understand it deeply. We'll meet you where you are and take you further.

  • You're welcome to bring your camera if it helps you feel at home, but this is not a workshop designed as a shoot-out experience. You will be watching and learning from the team through live demonstrations of an editorial photoshoot. All equipment is provided and you won't need your own gear to get full value from the day.

  • No preparation is required. If you want to arrive with something in mind, spend a little time in the days before looking at editorial and fashion photography that moves you. Come with a sense of what you're drawn to visually and we'll help you start to understand why.

  • This workshop is fully demonstration-based. Rather than dividing attention between operating your own camera and absorbing what's being taught, we've designed the day so you can focus entirely on watching, learning, and asking questions in real time. You'll leave with a far deeper understanding of light than any trigger-pull could give you in a single session.

  • Not currently. The in-studio format is fundamental to what makes this experience worthwhile. That said, we are developing a complementary digital resource series for alumni. Stay tuned.

  • Out of respect for the creative process and everyone in the room, participants are welcome to photograph lighting setups and take notes throughout the day. Video recording of demonstrations is not permitted unless expressly approved by the instructors.

  • Full refunds are available up to 14 days before the workshop date. Within 14 days, your registration can be transferred to a future session. We understand life happens and will always work with you to find the right solution.
